While the player may obtain sprite pods at any time, they cannot "use" (open) any until they have completed 2-3 
Mission: An Eternal Bond. The player gets to choose one sprite for free during this mission, and the chosen sprite is not "unboxed" from a pod by the player.
When used, a relevant Level 1 Battle Sprite will pop out. This battle sprite will be permanently "bonded" to the player who opened the box. Therefore, if the player wishes to trade sprites, they must do so while the sprite is still in the pod.
The animation that plays when opening a Sprite Pod is similar to the one that occurs when opening a Prize Box.
History
At first, the player could only have one Battle Sprite in their arsenal.
As of this announcement in August 2013, players could obtain more than one battle sprite via pods. Since then, more pods have been released over time, featuring reskins of battle sprites.
