Request to auto-filter items by star level

Now that the new tags are in place, would it be hard to make the template additionally autotag everything in subcategories? For example, it would be very helpful to click on a single category and instantly see all "4* helmets" available. This wasn't a problem when the game launched, but with 60 known helmets on the wiki so far, some way of filtering the information would be valuable. --Pauling 20:30, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

Since every type of item has a star rating, that would mean 5x for each type of item. This is also the option of grouping, such as X-Star Gear & X-Star Weapons. How do you think players would want it/which method would be more useful? Or would it be a case of needing all of those? --Equinox 21:37, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

There is also 0 star gear, so there'd actually be 6 categories, plus a catchall for "unlabeled". ;) I imagine that the queries would be specific- the whole rationale behind the suggestion is to provide filters so that people can choose the best equipment of each type. Insofar as "3* gear" would still be too broad to help someone choose which helmet to buy, my thinking is as follows: 1) Each helmet would be part of the broad "helmets" category by default. 2) It would ALSO be part of the "n-star helmets" sub-category. 3) Each "n-star helmets" category would be clearly tagged and listed as a subcategory of "Helmets". Next thought is that we could just do all X-Star items together and players can look at the star groups on the item page using the sort button (i.e. swords). I'll go through those pages and make sure everything that's in the item category is on the item page. That would probably be more useful because people would want to see the info in that table, not just the name of the item. --Equinox 22:57, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

I agree that a summary table can be really helpful- on the other hand, the current summary tables per item are woefully out of date and inaccurate. The advantage of an automated solution is that it always reflects all known items, which would be a useful temporary solution as we continue to deal with the backlog. --Pauling 23:04, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

I'm just not that convinced that creating 36 categories will mean people will use them. Looking at Special:PopularPages, while it doesn't cover categories, shows generally what people have been interested in on the wiki. Not too many views of those pages, so I'm guessing that hardly anyone but us looks at the category pages. Anyhow, doing the star categories is pretty easy. You can just add [[Category:{{{star}}}-star XXXX]] to the switch code. --Equinox 00:12, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

I'll try to look at this eventually, and keep this as a reminder. The "most popular" pages feature is cool, but I notice that the most popular pages are also generally the oldest, or those linked from the front page. (check out the cliff in pageviews after "main page") It's not surprising that items receive short shrift: this is newer content, and until recently, the categories were so unfilled as to be useless. But I do get a lot of questions about what item is worth crafting, so I'll keep this here for my "eventual to-do" list. --Pauling 00:52, 5 January 2011 (UTC)
