The Purple Spiral is an artifact. The administrators of Spiral Knights give the Purple Spiral to knights who have contributed to the community in some special way.
The honor is awarded very rarely — perhaps as few as three times ever. Reportedly it was awarded to Dogrock and Katmint in 2012 or earlier (see here). It was awarded to Bopp in 2017 (see screenshot here).
