The Clockworks and most every machine the Spiral Knights have encountered on Cradle run on energy. Not only that, but the Knights' own tools and equipment, such as their gate elevators and power armor, run on energy as well! Thankfully, the Knights were well prepared for such a reliance on energy, and have made certain to equip their armor with a device that is able to constantly pull energy from the air; known as Mist Energy, this ambient supply of power allows them to function, as well as temporarily power up any machinery they may encounter. However, Mist Energy dissipates almost as quickly as it is acquired, and thus a knight’s supply of it can never be permanently stored.

As luck would have it, the Strangers that run Haven have long been mining various parts of The Clockworks for pure, crystallized energy and, like everything in their possession, it is for sale. This Crystal Energy is much more stable and can last forever in a knight's reserve tank in a form for convenient for storage and for exchange with other knights.

Obtaining Energy

Your armor's reserve tanks will automatically distill Mist Energy from the air at a constant rate, but can only store 500 units of said energy at any one time. If you run out of Mist Energy, you can either take a break from exploration and allow your tanks to slowly refill themselves, or you can obtain some more stable Crystal Energy.

Crystal Energy can be obtained for use in one of two ways: by purchasing it directly from Three Rings for real-life money, or by exchanging Crowns for it at the Energy Depot.

Purchasing Crystal Energy

Crystal Energy can be purchased directly from Three Rings on our official website. You can browse the energy packages available by clicking on the energy symbol in the bottom right of your in-game UI, or by talking to the Stranger responsible for running Haven's Energy Depot.

The Energy Depot

The Energy Depot located in Haven is the place to go to exchange your hard-earned Crowns for other knights' Crystal Energy. Look for the distinctive energy symbol mask! Follow the instructions on the menu screen to either put a portion of your Crystal Energy up for sale at a price of your choosing or to purchase some previously-offered energy. The Energy Depot's Market tab will be able to tell you at what price the most recent sale was, so use that information to determine an appropriate buy or sell price.

Consuming Energy

There are a number of ways throughout Haven and The Clockworks that a Knight can spend his allotment of energy.

Elevators: Each knight must spend a set amount of energy to use an elevator to travel to the next floor of The Clockworks. This cost will automatically be paid when the party steps onto an elevator. Elevators that take the party back to Haven do not require energy.

Energy Objects: A variety of machines can be encountered in dungeons, each one offering a different service or benefit. The required energy to utilize each machine varies and will be displayed at the object. These objects include vending machines, gun turrets and other useful emplacements.

Crafting New Items: Energy is used to fuse crafting materials together into a new piece of equipment. The required energy varies according to the rarity of the item that the player is attempting to create.

Starting a Guild: An amount of energy must be extended to start a guild.
