Gun Puppies are construct turrets which shoot bullets at you. The amount of bullets they shoot depends on their tier. They have limited turn speed, meaning you can run around them in circles so they can't hit you.
Howlitzers are undead turrets similar to Gun Puppies, except they're, well, undead. They can be considered as the only non-boss multi-stage enemy.
In their first "stage", they'll act exactly the same as a gun puppy. After they take enough damage they'll give drops and switch to their second stage.
In their second stage, they'll act completely differently - They'll follow you around at high speed (in tier 1, they won't follow you, but just go straight forward), and will explode for high damage if they hit you. Fighting them in this stage isn't necessary, since they'll explode after a few seconds if they didn't hit you, and don't drop any extra crowns/heat/materials in this stage. You still can fight them to make them explode sooner than normal, though. If you choose to attack them, you should bring a gun, since they still deal the full damage of the explosion when killed in this stage if you're too close. You're also more likely to get hit by them while trying to hit them when using a sword.
Howlitzers have no special variations except the basic status versions.
