At the moment we have no real standards we expect new recruits to have. The only thing we could expect from a new recruit is to be friendly. If you're more of a lone wolf than anything, make sure to point it out at the start, it's one thing for us to know you're not much of a talker, and it's another to be rude.

Promotions to Member are pretty much freebies, all you have to do to get your very first promotion is to either have a days age in Cosmicism or run a mission/arcade with a high rank in order to prove your skill. (ability to survive a single run :P)
