The Snarbolax. It is immune to all damage in this state.
The Snarbolax is a beast boss that inhabits the Gloaming Wildwoods. It appears as a shadowy mass of fangs and claws and it is normally immune to weapons.

Monstrous Profile

Said to be a massive beast draped in living shadows, this dark predator enjoys toying with its prey before delivering the final blow. It is advised that only Knights who have mastered Tier 1 take on this formidable beast as those who have entered unprepared have never returned!

Strategy

The Snarbolax when it is stunned.

The Snarbolax will burrow underground at the start of the battle, emerging at one of four corners of the room. After emerging, it will either perform a ranged attack, or it will approach the player and perform a bite combo (similar to that of Alpha wolvers). In this state however, the Snarbolax is immune to all attacks and status effects, so it is best not to try damaging it.

When the Snarbolax is on the surface, you have a brief window of time to push/bait it towards the center of the room where a Beast Bell is located (hitting this bell while beast types are near will stun them). Hitting the bell while the Snarbolax is burrowing underground (as long as it passes close to the bell) will stun it as well. When the Snarbolax is stunned, it will turn yellow and collapse on the ground(throwing Stun vials will not work, as the Snarbolax is immune to these attacks as well). It is at this stage that you may attack it. It will shortly regain consciousness (turning black), buff itself and resume its normal routine. Repeat this process until the Snarbolax is dead.

The Snarbolax is weak to Piercing and resistant to Elemental attacks, like all beast types.

The following information has been collected about status effects:

  • Status effect vials (including stun vials) do not appear to have any effect on the Snarbolax while it is invulnerable.
  • The Snarbolax may be set on fire while stunned, but stops taking fire damage once it again becomes invulnerable.
  • The Snarbolax can be cursed while stunned. It is currently unknown if it takes damage from attacking while stunned and cursed.
  • The Snarbolax can be frozen while stunned. It remains frozen even if it again becomes invulnerable. It is currently unknown if it takes damage from the freeze expiring in either state.

Tactics

Have party members stand in opposing corners of the room, ready to push the Snarbolax to the middle when it appears (shield bashing is the easiest method). One person should be waiting at the Beast Bell, and, once the Snarbolax is near, should hit the bell to stun it. Then, everyone should attack it simultaneously until it regains consciousness (try pushing it into a wall so knockbacks don't cause your allies to miss their attacks).

If soloing (or tightly coordinating with others), you should be in the center of the room near the bell, dodging/blocking the Snarbolax's attacks until it approaches you, then hit the bell.

Alternative method (best for solo)

Get a shield and armour with piercing resistance and shield in the middle waiting for him to charge at you. When Snarbolax is in the radius of the bell, hit the bell and attack him furiously. Repeat 2-3 times and he'll be dead.

Notes

  • A Recon Module can be obtained in front of the lift right after killing the Snarbolax.
  • The Snarbolax's health varies by the number of players in the party. Under some circumstances, it can be easier solo than in a group.

Trivia

  • The Snarbolax was released on June 2nd, 2011 in a Tier 1 update.
  • The Snarbolax makes many threatening, cameo appearances in the levels leading up to its lair. It may charge at and stun you during some appearances. Shield or dodge (because he waits a few seconds before charging) as he passes by to avoid being stunned.
    • In the maps leading up to his lair, the appearances the Snarbolax makes are timed; so entering the rooms at a slower rate will make Snarbolax attack earlier, causing him to miss.
  • The Snarbolax is affectionately known as Snarby to the creators and Spiral Knights fan base.
  • A_Beastly_Limerick_Competition to herald the arrival of the Snorbolax was held by fans in June 2011.
