An Officer can specialise in a variety of game mechanics, but the compulsary requirements of an Officer are communication, fairness, and responsibility, in additon to the Veteran Requirements. An officer who masters multiple of the following categories will go very far in Spiral Knights.

Combat

A combat orientated officer must master at least 3 weapons, although do not necissarily have to have them all equipped or at 5 star, but in some instances, this will be applicable where the 5 star weapon mechanics change. They must also be well practiced with shield cancelling, where it applies. Most players, including swordsman and offensive gunners often fall into this Officer category.

Teamwork

A teamwork orientated officer must learn how to function in unisen with the other party members. They must have a good understanding of all the pros and cons of status effects, and must not obstruct the party. (except in the instance where the party is not functioning correctly in the first place. In this case, the Officer has a chance to display leadership qualities) They do not necissarily have to be superb fighters themselves. A teamwork officer must also be aware of the locations of party members when in switch-gate mazes such as in the Ironclaw Munitions Factory. Examples of good teamwork are visible in battles with Trojans and effective use of bombs altogether, primarily freeze and poison applying variants.

Tactics

Tactics orientated officers are relatively difficult to come across, and are often self-taught, rather than educated in this profession. However it is still possible to train a capable player in the art of tactics. A tactics orientated officer must learn various environment-based skills, based around monsters, gear, bosses, clockwork levels and lockdown.

Monsters

Learning the behaviours of monsters is key for a combat tactics officer. They must learn the patters in which monsters spawn, movement and attack patterns of monsters, aggro range, and how to effectively combat them. A leadership focused tactical officer will also co-ordinate the party's attacks and notify the party of impeding dangers

Gear

Gear is prior planning of a level, what armour, shield and weapon to take for the ensuing monsters. Knowing the level names and icons will greatly assist a tactition with bringing the correct type of equipment; the level can frequently have more monster species not mentioned. A leadership orientated tactical officer will also co-ordinate the party's equipment and notify them of upcoming monsters and what equipment to bring.

Leadership

A leadership orientated officer must not only be patient with others, but also understand that there may be players who know more than themselves. A leader is not only kind and one step ahead of the party, but humble enough to step down when a decision arises that they do not themselves know how to handle. Leadership is an advanced form of teamwork in which the officer does not only understand how the party is moving, but steps in and corrects issues that need attention. This is generally a common found skill, but in more refined stages it cannot be taught. Officers who can employ leadership, tactics and teamwork together forge outstanding parties, and improve other player's performance.
