Pro-rated upkeep follows the logic of real-world pro rata. It pertains to newly installed expansions and the Guild Hall's upkeep cycle. Each installed expansion adds to the hall's upkeep, but this fee does not include the true totals of all individual upkeep costs of new expansions until the next week. To compensate for time dynamics, a few things occur:
- The hall's upkeep for that cycle adjusts, displaying an amount less than the true upkeep total in relation to new expansions that were installed during that cycle. No crowns pertaining to this display are deducted from the treasury until the cycle completes.
- An amount of crowns called "pro-rated upkeep" in addition to an expansion's installation fee will be deducted from the treasury at the moment of that expansion's installation.
: Pro-rated upkeep equation and predictions:The percent of an expansion's true upkeep that goes into its pro-rated upkeep when that expansion is installed seems to always be the same percent as the time remaining in the current upkeep cycle.
As a result of this relationship, a larger amount will be paid as pro-rated upkeep for an expansion's upkeep the earlier in the hall's upkeep cycle the installation for that expansion occurs.
For example, 1,002 crowns are paid in addition to the installation fee of a 1F expansion if the expansion is installed 3 days into that hall's cycle. Rounded down, 80% of the cycle's time remains and 1,002 crowns is 80% of that expansion's true upkeep fee of 1,250 crowns.
Time remaining adjusts each second, as does the game's pro-rated upkeep calculation.
Logically, pro-rated upkeep for an expansion can never exceed the true upkeep of the expansion it pertains to.
As a result of this system, an expansion's true upkeep will eventually be paid in full via the combination of pro-rated upkeep and temporarily adjusted hall upkeep by the end of that cycle if the expansion remains installed. Thus pro-rated upkeep is essentially a smaller amount of upkeep paid upfront to balance the guild's usage of that space with consideration of time passing during that upkeep cycle.
This system is likely in place in order to avoid problems with the following scenarios:
- Making the guild pay in full for the expansion's upkeep plus its installation at the same time has the possibility of overcharging the guild for that space if the expansion is removed within that cycle.
- Skipping the upkeep fee of that expansion for that upkeep cycle.
