Minor (major) accessibility/readability tweak for Tables

Hello!

I was told to ask you about this, because you are one of the more frequent editors on here, so it would be neat to have your opinion about it.

For a little while of reading this wiki, I've felt like many of the bigger tables in the wiki were quite hard to read for people with vision or reading impairments, such as item tables, lootbox drop lists, and many others under the same style. So I tried to come up with a version of them that would be very similar, but have less of a harsh bunch of lines in the middle, so that users can flow between cells with more ease.

A example of what I mean is on my user sandbox, and I'd be interested to hear your thoughts about it! :D

Thanks in advance, --Calinou (Madhill) (talk) 12:46, 12 May 2026 (UTC)

Hey Madhill! I was looking at the table and they do look "less heavy" at sight. I like it, dunno how it would look implemented, but I liked what you did to the showhide of prizeboxes so I think it could be tested in some templates, after all, the wiki have almost a decade since the templates were revamped so it's good to have a change for the better, especially for those with reading impairments as you mentioned. Are there any templates you want to test? I was thinking the Template:PrizeBoxTable and the Template:CalendarTable could be a choice but if you want to test it in some other I'm good. Just (imo) implement your changes in a couple first and see the result in case there could be any issue. Maybe the Template:GearList/Defensive could be the first since its one of the main list and it does have many thick dark lines HikaruFER 05:51, 13 May 2026 (UTC)
Hey HikaruFer! I saw your reply, and your comment on my user page. And decided to try a couple more variations of the same example table :3
To me, the last one with 2px corners and no brightness variation on cells looks the best and least heavy, but let me know what you Think!
As for real case testing, I would be up to test this on any table, But I do agree that prize box and gear list ones which you mentioned, are good candidates, as they are most likely to have eyes on them, and thus could definitely benefit from some "de-fluff" I feel :3
Especially since they are quite long tables, with sometimes hundreds of rows, which can be made extra-cumbersome if the table styling has a lot of spacing on it. --Calinou (Madhill) (talk) 11:20, 13 May 2026 (UTC)
Hey again~ I couldn't reply yesterday but I do like the last one too (2px round edges and yellow) althought 3px its good too. Could you also change the dark color of the stats and abilities panel? The one in showhide, maybe to grey like the other color in the table. Still, im happy with ur work! Thanks for helping with the wiki~ HikaruFER 06:33, 15 May 2026 (UTC)
Hello again! It's been a little bit, I've been doing a bunch of tests in the background. But now I finally implemented a version of my revamped tables for both Template:PrizeBoxTable and Template:CalendarTable, which uses a new template I created Template:UniversalTable/Start and its associated Template:UniversalTable! This new template's goal is to be used for most places where a table is needed, it can have up to 10 columns, and has parameters for alignment, width of columns, and should overall work like a table, but streamlined as a template, similarly to what User cards are like. Let me know what you think, and if you notice any wrong formatting on the prize box pages! I will continue to do R&D and keep an eye out for potential improvements on my end :3 -- Calinou (talk) 19:56, 18 May 2026 (UTC)
Heeey~ I was checking the Prize Boxes and everything looks good! It feels simplified compared to the old one in a good way ofc, and the color change to the showhide/gear feels so much better than that dark color. About the new table, it's like a common one? when theres need to be a table but instead of creating a singular one you can use that one right? I ended up checking ur sandbox to understand it better xd. Btw! I forgot to mention but can you add again the "state = uncollapsed/collapsed" to Template:Showhide/Box?. Usually its uncollapsed for the latest box and the rest is collapsed but with ur changes the "state" doesn't work anymore, could u add it back again plz? You can take FlowerTech Prize Box as an example. Besides that, everything looks good! Thanks for your hard work, it feels nice to see the wiki getting a needed "revamp" or maintenance in looks! HikaruFER 05:25, 19 May 2026 (UTC)
Helloo! To asnwer your question, yes! This table template basically works the same as Template:GearList/Defensive would, but info is abstracted so that you input the labels and content of every column & row yourself, instead of it being pre-formatted like it is in other more specialized table templates :D
You would first create a Template:UniversalTable/Start with colCount set to any number of columns you need, and fill in column headers by using col0HeadContent, col1HeadContent, col2HeadContent, and so on. Then you would add any number of Template:UniversalTable you want, for as many rows as you want in the table, all rows also need to have colCount set to the same value as the start template, and content filled in with col0Content, col1Content, col2Content, etc... I specified all other parameters for things like width, alignment (vertical & horizontal), sortable, and some more in the documentation for both templates, so if you ever feel in the fog about any of it, you can read them (and poke me if any of it isn't clear, that would be my bad haha =u=').
You can also check the code for Template:PrizeBoxTable, Template:PrizeBoxTable/Start, Template:CalendarTable, and Template:CalendarTable/Start to see how I implemented this Universal Table on them :>
Also I fixed the box showhide! Thank you for notifying me about the missing state parameter! -- Calinou (talk) 08:13, 19 May 2026 (UTC)
Hoi again again ヾ(•ω•`)o
I have edited a lot of other tables to stress test the universal template, and so far I have had very few hurdles, some required fixes in the template, others were due to quirks that the original templates for these tables used. All of these newly edited templates can be seen in Category:UniversalTableUsers, I basically performed a large scale test on all of the Usable page, and I have noticed no real problems. Let me know if you ever spot any, I'll be happy to tweak and fix as needed ヾ( ̄▽ ̄) -- Calinou (talk) 14:26, 19 May 2026 (UTC)
Ohhh I think I get it, and also, that way you will just have to edit the UniversalTable for a format/look change on various tables at the same time right? Sounds efficient! I like it~ I checked every template changed (its good that the categories work again xd) and everything looks good! I noticed there are missing Template:SpriteReskinList and Template:SpriteList, you can change them too since you tested the SpritePodList. I particularly like how Personal Color looks now. Which one you will be testing next?~ So far the implementation looks good! I see everything working as it should~ Thanks again for your work! I know so little of templates/wikia that its good to have someone helping with the "modernization" and/or implementation as i sometimes call it (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧ HikaruFER 08:06, 20 May 2026 (UTC)
Yes! Any edits to Template:UniversalTable will reflect a cross the wiki, in fact I just made one to demonstrate hehe. All headers for Unuiversal table users should now be position:sticky, which means they will stick to the top of the page when scrolled past, so that the user can always access the headings for sorting & the like! Also I will continue to look at tables to update, Template:SpriteReskinList and Template:SpriteList are good candidates, I shall consider them! o(〃^▽^〃)o -- Calinou (talk) 23:54, 20 May 2026 (UTC)
Heyo again, I updtaed Template:SpriteList and Template:SpriteList/Start to now use the new tables! But I couldn't find where Template:SpriteReskinList was used, and I can't seem to find a page about sprite reskins alone, is it used anywhere? -- Calinou (talk) 13:58, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
Last hello from me today (my hands hurt, I typed too much code lol), I took some time to add some more tests to my sandbox using Template:UniversalTable/BigHeader/Start using the shield table as a sort of guinea pig ( •̀ ω •́ )✧. Let me know how those feel, the first one under that # is more in line with the original, where the second is a little more experimental, and trying to de-clutter the yellow header~ -- Calinou (talk) 16:40, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
Just a brief note about how to find where a template is used: You can use "What links here" under "tools" in the menu on the left when you're on the page. In the case of Template:SpriteReskinList, you should end up with Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:SpriteReskinList. Also note that indirect links are included in the list, for example in Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:UniversalTable you won't find only the templates that use the UniversalTable directly, but also pages that use those templates. --Matusm (talk) 22:11, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
Thank you! I wasn't aware :O This shall be very useful when converting future templates and it's not entirely clear where they're used! -- Calinou (talk) 09:26, 22 May 2026 (UTC)

Newlines in templates

Hello! Just wanted to give you a small warning that newline symbols at the end (or beginning) of the template are also carried to the pages that use them. It's probably easiest to illustrate on the <noinclude> tags at the end of the templates. While it's pretty to write <noinclude>{{documentation}}</noinclude> on a new line, you also introduce here a new newline just before the noinclude tag. One way to avoid this is to write the starting <noinclude> on the preceding line with some text right before it. Then the newline will be within the noinclude tag and, due to what the tag does, will be present only on the template page where it will do no harm. Alternatively, you can use HTML comments to comment it out (<!--(newline)-->), but it's not very pretty. And of course, you can also put the "<noinclude>{{documentation}}</noinclude>" thing whole on the preceding line and don't worry about any newlines.

You can also come across this issue when you use the #ifeq or similar function. The newlines they may introduce are far trickier to get rid of. Here's one I was fixing recently: Template:CostumeTable/Start. I don't want to discourage you from using these functions, just to keep in mind some of the more subtle effects they may have.

The newlines are an issue when you transclude a template to another page. It hinders formating a bit. Single newline is ignored by the wiki, 2 newlines divide paragraphs and 3 or more add empty lines between the paragraphs. For example, in the News/2020 page, there is one empty line between each entry (2 newlines) and everything works fine. However, if the {{NewsTable}} template would have a newline at the end, then there could be at most 1 newline between the entries (1+1=2), otherwise all of them would break a little (there would be an empty line in the last column, 1+2=3). So the newlines aren't that big of a deal, sometimes it doesn't even have to be a problem, but it's best to avoid sending them to other pages somehow.

Also, for testing templates I sometimes use the Special:Expandtemplates page. I use it mostly as a second editor window for testing the changes without having to modify the original template to see the results and then reverting it back after the test. The additional info there may also be useful sometimes. --Matusm (talk) 21:24, 19 March 2020 (UTC)

Ohhh yeah, do u think it matters in the "fix" i been doing to the bosses page? (like, take Snarbolax for example). Since i did it like this to avoid a visual mess xd, i got lost looking for an specific word being all cramped. I remembered to dont add a newline at the Template:Boss when adding the auto-categories :D, that ended up fine right?. And in no way i find ur msg discouraging, i like to learn~ and as i said i forgot many of the "rules" for the templates so i only edit them if i want to test a fix or add something i think its needed; im guilty of using the "enter" key too much sometimes, its a mania xd i try to just add one between each }} {{ just so i or any other wikieditor dont get lost between each entry (like the news/2020) but when i edit a template i (most of the time) have to test if everything ended up fine, like, when i shorted the APNG's template and earsed a newline and then the boxes glued each other badly so i was like "oh kk that was there for a reason" *manually revert* xd. Next time im gonna try the special template u mention :D.
Feel free to leave me more msgs like this~ HikaruFer (talk) 21:57, 19 March 2020 (UTC)
Yes, it matters in this case. You've introduced a newline at the end of the Boss template, so now the boss pages have one empty line at the beginning. If you edit the Snarbolax page, remove one newline that follows the Boss template and preview it, the empty line at the beginning should disappear. But of course, this should be fixed in the template, not pages. :P
The 2 newlines between news entries are fine, even newlines inside the templates may be fine. The only issue are newlines near beginning and end of the template. I like when the templates are nicely readable, too, but often it's because of weird rules like these that you can't make the templates look very pretty. This one rule specifically is responsible for the long <includeonly><noinclude> chains at the ends. But it's also thanks to this rule that you can put that many enters between entries. :D --Matusm (talk) 23:27, 19 March 2020 (UTC)
OHHH i saw it xdd i didnt notice it, i mean, not that it was due a newline in the template xd. jajaja its funny how that simple "enter" caused that xd. Now it looks prettier :D~. Thx for telling me this way~ if u edit it i wouldnt have understand where and why that newline caused what it did HikaruFer (talk) 23:34, 19 March 2020 (UTC)
No problem. I'm happy it worked out well. :) --Matusm (talk) 00:04, 20 March 2020 (UTC)

Tile minimaps

Hello! I'd like to know if those minimap images you've uploaded are from the game (stored image files) or if you recreated them from scratch with image manipulation software? Example --Spockler (talk) 04:44, 12 May 2020 (EEST)

Hello there~ The ones i have done are all with image manipulation software, i take screens in-game of the map, put them together with the software, then i use a selection tool to create all the shapes, and then i add the icons (from the games files, which are the same as the ones here in the wiki). Sadly, the maps seen in-game are generated by the game itself so there aren't images files of them and those had to be done manually :( --HikaruFER 02:08, 12 May 2020 (UTC)
I must point out that these maps are very well done and no doubt recreating them took a lot of time and effort. You even got the collision right with the pixel precision on these maps that are missing some tiles on the edges! I assume you're also using Tudey scene editor for this job, as most of the map can't be captured by the minimap view distance?
Also, I wonder if scene (level) IDs are welcome in this wikipedia as technical trivia? I've studied game levels for quite a while and I could add their IDs to their respective articles, as there are some interesting things going on behind the scenes (pun intended). However I'm not sure if such data is welcome here as Grey Havens might see it as a possible threat to the game (as they sometimes do) even though they aren't monitoring wikipedia (at all). --Spockler (talk) 15:21, 12 May 2020 (EEST)
Thanks! Not only me has done some of theses map btw :), i have done a few. I took screens of the big map, the minimap its extremely tiny to make it work, its posible but too bothersome xd, so with a few images-screen i can complete the guide for the whole map.
And, you mean IDs as game files? like "Starlight Cradle's map is generated with this game file"? if its that, im not gonna lie, that would be interesting to check but doesnt have space in the wiki sadly :(, they (Grey Havens) had said they prefer static maps (like the one in Apocrea's mission or Sanctuary) to not be uploaded in the main space of the wiki since they give the static efect in-game for a reason, theres still these images around but not in the main space. You know now that u mention it, Novaster once mentioned that someone wrote a script to make these map images easier but i never got to ask them about it, do u know something about that? --HikaruFER 17:19, 12 May 2020 (UTC)
> And, you mean IDs as game files?
No, as scene file names (e.g. 1 for Haven: Town Square or 393 for Starlight Cradle: Shrine of Slumber IV). I don't want to upload files themselves or maps of procedural levels, but just IDs.
> Novaster once mentioned that someone wrote a script to make these map images easier, do u know something about that?
Unfortunately no, but there's the Super Zoom mod that allows you to move camera to sky-high to get the top-down view. Minimap is aligned with the 3D tilemap, but it's not 1:1 size. It might still be useful, tho. --Spockler (talk) 19:56, 13 May 2020 (EEST)
As for the IDs it sounds like something you can share in discord and/or the forums since some ppl may find it useful but here in wiki theres no much pages relating to the code sadly, i mean, at least on the main space D:.
I dont usually use mod but in case i have troubles with maps i may try it :D (but, dunno where to look tho? do u have some link or a google keyword?) although most of the mapd are done (for what i have seen recently) --HikaruFER 18:02, 13 May 2020 (UTC)
Here's the link to the mods page. There's also a invitation link to KnightLauncher modloader Discord group (where are even more mods listed). I'm also in this group. In case you want to contact me, my username starts with 'Thy'. --Spockler (talk) 19:01, 14 May 2020 (EEST)
Thx! Im gonna check then out them~ --HikaruFER 19:00, 14 May 2020 (UTC)

Old design

I can't believe I missed out old minimap and Shadow Fire designs by just two months. When I crash-landed on July 6, 2014 there were already a new particle effect used of Shadow Fire and improved color scheme for minimap. --Spockler (talk) 01:30, 29 May 2020 (EEST)

Hahaha yeah, fun fact its i played in May and didnt remember it had the old desing, even the fire in the traps xd and when i came back in October, it already had the new design but i didnt noticed anything. It was yesterday looking through my screens that i realized xd --HikaruFER 23:46, 28 May 2020 (UTC)

"Crash Course" vs "Spiral Knights Main Theme"

Crash Course and Spiral Knights Main Theme are actually two different similar sounding tracks. Crash Course is only used for the tutorial. --Leafblader (talk) 09:52, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

Ohh well i was using the OST list but i didnt remember "Spiral Knight Main Theme" was in there the first time i check it xd (i went to check right now just to be sure). I noticed the track was similar but not identical to the bgm in the game but stick to "Crash Course" since i thought the other one was not part of the OST :O --HikaruFER 01:28, 18 June 2020 (UTC)

Hidden Vending Machines

Hey, just to clear some things up... I can understand that the image of those Vending Machines can be confusing and seem out of context, but that's why I called them "hidden Vending Machines". Note stated that they cannot be seen nor interacted, but they've existed since the introduction of Arcade Battle Arena. It's for the historical purposes. I suppose it doesn't really belong in the gallery, as images of older content on other articles are on the right side of the page. --Spockler (talk) 01:58, 21 June 2020 (EEST)

Sorry for the late reply, im away from the wiki, just checking every few weeks. As for the image, i assumed the hidden would mean some misunderstanding since hidden could mean "find it" in-game but not hidden "within the code". So to avoid that i prefer it to move it from the main space --HikaruFER 04:52, 19 July 2020 (UTC)

Prestige Leaderboard idea

Hi, HikaruFer. I have an idea for Prestige Leaderboard. Divide it into sections...

  • 2,000,000+
  • 1,000,000-1,999,999
  • 500,000-999,999
  • 250,000-499,999

...and remove the numerical rankings 1, 2, 3, etc. These changes would de-emphasize the competition among players, instead emphasizing the achievement of milestones. They would also make the leaderboard slightly easier to maintain.

Are you okay with these changes? I ask because you have edited the article, and you are currently one of the most active editors on this wiki generally. Vroom (talk) 16:55, 10 January 2026 (UTC)

Hey Vroom, I like the idea of de-emphasize the competition among players but since the page is a Leaderboard then i dunno if it would lose the purpose. What if you propose this idea in the forums where more ppl could see it and give their opinion? Usually that's how big changes were discussed although I know there aren't many editors now xd.
I would say to write this same idea in the forums first, but for curiosity, how would you organize it? You can do a mockup here or maybe use the Talk:Prestige_Leaderboard to show better as an example to the forums, either way let me know, I kinda like the idea of a change since the page its really old looking xd --HikaruFER 00:50, 11 January 2026 (UTC)

Prize Box pages edits

Sorry! You didn't need to edit the pages, there was a trailing newline in the template. I was slow in fixing it. --Matusm (talk) 08:38, 12 May 2026 (UTC)

Ohh Its okay, it wasnt that many anyway~ I thought it was cuz I tend to leave spaces between templates xd. Thanks~ HikaruFER 08:40, 12 May 2026 (UTC)

Protected Showhide has been fixed!

Hello, This is a short message to say that I have sent the updated Show/hide template from my sandbox to GH, and that it's been adopted!
Which means that all broken showhides of the wiki are now fixed, but also that we should still look out for potentially odd layouts, like if one of them has too narrow of a box, or if a header is too thick or thin.
One of the places I noticed that had a bunch of broken Show/hide boxes was actually your user card, which is now neatly displayed :D
Now I will be checking other templates that use Show/hide in the following days to see if they display adequately. Hoping you and other editors can do the same :>
--Calinou (Madhill) 13:18, 14 May 2026 (CET)

Ngl, this was something that was bothering me since the system update ahgkjakjghf, I liked the previous look so much and then the new table was kinda broken but I couldn't suggest anything to GH since I don't work with templates (I just copy/move/adjust), so thanks for that~ It's nice having someone active who knows about it, Matsum helped me when I needed help with errors xd. My user card looks so organized now, as it was before the system update~ If i happen to see any other showhide that dont have the current template i will fix it, but for now I haven't encountered any. I do remember the List of sets tho, could you change the dark colors of these showhide too? and later the implementation of a fixed tablet ofc~ Thanks for your work! HikaruFER 06:40, 15 May 2026 (UTC)
Well list of sets should now be fixed :P
I will remain on the lookout for more, do feel free to ping me if you find any more broken Showhides, I have found some that were protected so i'll shoot a msg to Clotho about it too -- Calinou (talk) 05:44, 16 May 2026 (UTC)
Sure thing! Thanks for the help~ The list looks nice HikaruFER 05:46, 16 May 2026 (UTC)
