Herex is an NPC.
Appearance
Herex is a large gremlin with the demeanor of a Ghostmane Stalker. His grey undergarments and pale fur are covered in red fabric, with a single somewhat robotic green eye glaring out of a slit in the wraps. A tube of some kind protrudes from the fabric near his mouth, leading down and around under his left arm. His covered paws display markings similar to the Crimson Order symbol, even though Herex no longer serves as one of the Nine. He always carries a sword on his hip and two green saw blades orbit his body. When he makes major appearances and disappearances, visual effects similar to the Green Leafy Aura flutter around him.
Battle
Strategy
- He can hide his location using an ability similar to chromalisk camouflage when out of combat. This behavior is seen in 4-2 Mission: A New Threat, though he is not fought in this mission.
- His cloaking ability and weapon usage is very similar to the techniques used by Stalkers. When in range, Herex will swipe at the player with a saw blade, stepping forward for the first swipe and whirling around for a second swing. When farther away, he will seem to charge up an attack, launching three saw blades that spread out in a cone. He will frequently cloak, but his proximity is betrayed by a warning mark. Be wary of receiving a death mark. Avoid getting hit when marked, and strike Herex to break his cloak.
- It is best to simply corner him then keep hitting, as his orbiting green saw blades do not injure the player. Even the basic attacks of a brandish type of sword will work, though this is slow. An elemental sword is something the player might have brought to deal with the rest of the monsters in the mission as well as Herex's various toxic constructs. A Blitz Needle will make short work of the numerous Undead in the preceding levels, and will work just fine against Herex.
Notes
This character is mentioned in Expansion Mission: Operation Crimson Hammer and Dangerous Mission: Compound 42. He was first seen with release 2014-05-21.
Herex, also known as "The Whispering Venom," was a member of the Crimson Order. He owns a gremlin bioweapon facility named "Compound 42," a place visited as part of a Danger Mission of the same name.
A Scenario Room in arcade Compound levels is associated with Herex. Inspecting a gremlin body reveals a message: The others must never know. Silence them. -H
In the 7-3 Mission: Spark and Roar: Hidden Hideout floor, a module can be found with information about Herex and his more recent relationship with the Crimson Order. Black squares floating around the area, along with Herex's green insignia on the floor, indicate that the Swarm and Herex are involved in something together.
Schemer Razwog and Herex seem to have some connection with each other, indicated by a module found in the 1-4 Mission: Crossing the Chasm. Other connections these two characters may have are unknown.
Seerus and Herex seem to have a poor relationship, based on dialogue witnessed in Operation Crimson Hammer.
After obtaining The Artifact in the 4-2 Mission: A New Threat, Herex takes it into the Firestorm Citadel, where players encounter and fight him in the 10-2 Mission: Shadowplay. Later, in the 10-2 Mission: Dreams and Nightmares, he is seen with a large Swarm-like entity at the entrance to the Core. Herex's true motives and whereabouts are currently unknown.

An official order from Herex, the Whispering Venom:
Production of Compound 42 is to cease immediately. While a formidable poison and no doubt useful in achieving a... 'higher' power amongst the Order, it seems to have formed an intelligence well beyond the scope of a standard bio-toxin.

All traces of Compound 42 should be eliminated, along with the facility and any engineers not part of the inner fold. Remind the scorchers who find these orders uncomfortable that those who disobey shall soon hear my whisper in their ears.
Seal the doors and burn everything to the ground.

Hsst! So, you're the ones who defeated Razwog and took what was mine. You are not worthy of possessing this powerful Artifact and so I am here to relieve you of it.

Pah! I am no mere gremlin. I am the thousand eyes that watch you in the darkness. I am the hissing blade that whispers your doom. Tear down every wall and cog in this accursed place and you will find only shadows. I cannot be stopped by the likes of you! Hsst!

The Iron Law is Broken! The Crimson Order is False! The Nine are blind, they cannot see the Truth that lies below. The Nine are deaf, they cannot hear the Resonance that beats within this world.
Herex no longer serves as one of the Nine. Only Herex sees and hears the Truth. Only Herex will prevail. Follow Herex and you will be spared.
