Introduction

Crowns are arguably the most important (albeit simple) item in Spiral Knights. You can buy crystal energy from the energy depot with it, purchase gear from vendors and the Auction House with it, get unique variants from Punch... crowns have so many uses! Therefore, acquiring a vast amount of the commodity allows more of the game to be enjoyed. There are many ways to earn crowns quickly and legitimately, and this guide shares a few options.

Legitimate Methods

Using these methods to earn crowns is ethical.

Royal Jelly Palace

This mission is fairly easy if you have the right gear. There's no need to skip the boss level now because of the removal of elevator costs.

Prerequisites

  • Access to mission 5-2, "The Sovereign Slime"

Additional Rewards

  • 3 Jelly Gems

Rationale

The Royal Jelly Palace gives more crowns than almost any other set of non-shadow lair levels in the clockworks (the most obvious rival being Firestorm Citadel, which is very dangerous to all but the most experienced players). Some 1900 - 2500 crowns can be earned by completing these two levels (it will inevitably be towards the higher end if all four rooms of Red Carpet Runaround are completed), and therefore a sufficiently skilled player or players could earn well over 9,500 crowns in one run. In addition, the party will receive valuable experience in fighting monsters. The Jelly Gems dropped will also be helpful to players who want to craft their Antigua or Sealed Sword.

Blast Network Farming

This method of earning crowns is more tedious than the others, but is good for those who enjoy playing Blast Network. You just play lots of Blast Network to earn Krogmo Coins, redeem them for items from Sullivan, and sell the items on the Auction House.

Prerequisites

  • 1000 Crowns

Rationale

Assuming that one has a 50/50 win-loss ratio, a player only needs to play 7 games of Blast Network and win at least 3 times to earn at least 10 Krogmo Coins. Only losing actually loses you crowns, so your net loss is only around 360 or 560 crowns. Using the 10 Krogmo Coins to purchase an enamorock, you can sell off the enamorock for around 1500 crowns and earn a profit of about 1000 crowns. Winning more than 50% of the time results in less net loss and get even more Krogmo Coins, which leads to a higher profit.

Lockdown Farming

This has the same idea as the previous method, but instead of playing Blast Network, Lockdown is played instead.

Prerequisites

  • 1000 Crowns

Rationale

This method should only be chosen if one is skilled at playing Lockdown. If one's win-loss ratio for Lockdown is better than the win-loss ratio for Blast Network, then Lockdown should be played. The same rationale as the previous one's is applied.

Crafting

This method of earning crowns should only be used when one has an elevator pass or simply does not have the time to play. Using the 100 mist, one can craft 2 two star items and hope for a Unique Variant. The items are sold if they do not have a unique variant, and is either kept or sold if it does have a unique variant.

Prerequisites

  • Recipe
  • Recipe materials
  • 800 crowns

Rationale

Selling crafted items on the Auction House is an easy way to earn some quick crowns. If the item crafted gets a good Unique Variant, the profit will be much higher.

Gear Selection

Shields tend to sell more, but having a good Unique Variant on one earns less money. Other gear sell for less, but when they have a good Unique Variant, their value increases incredibly sharply. However, shields with good Unique Variants will still get a high price, just not as much as other gear.

Unethical Methods

Using such methods are against the rules and are listed solely to deter the reader of following such actions that could get their account banned or result in other negative consequences.

None at the moment.

Obsolete Methods

Recipe Selling

This is a very simple way to earn quite a bit of crowns, but there are many things that can go wrong, so be careful. The main idea is to join as many parties as possible before depth 12, buying Basil-only recipes from Basil at the terminal at depth 13, and going back to Haven to auction them off at a higher price and earning a large profit.

Prerequisites

  • Tier 2 access
  • 4000 Crowns
  • 20 Energy (Or possibly more)
  • Friends who do tier 2
  • Guild membership

Rationale

All 3 star recipes from Basil cost 4000 crowns, and the Basil-only ones can usually be sold for 7000 crowns or higher in the Auction House. That's a 3000 crown profit using 4000 crowns, or a 75% profit. To earn the same rate from a 5 star recipe (bought from Basil for 25000 crowns), one must sell the recipe for 43750 crowns. To earn the 75% rate for 4 star recipes (bought for 10000 crowns), one must sell for 17500 crowns. 5 star recipes sell for around the 30000-40000 crown area, and 4 star recipes sell for around the 12000-16000 crown area, so they are not as profitable as 3 star recipes. 2 star recipes simply do not have much interest from buyers, as they can usually be able to just buy the item from the Auction House at a cheap price instead of crafting it.

Terminals

The clockwork terminal at depth 13 sells 3 star recipes which gain the most profit. However, to be able to buy recipes from Basil, one must first join the party at depth 11 or earlier. So, it is recommended to join a guild or at least have a large amount of friends who do tier 2 clockworks frequently to be able to "jump in" at depth 11 or a few depths before.

Profitable Recipes

This is a list of some quick-selling recipes that are good to pick up:

* This item is particularly easy to sell, as deduced from personal experience.

Defense none.png Potential Pitfalls

  • It is not recommended to buy recipes to sell other than the ones on the preceding list, as many others can either be bought from Kozma or simply are not wanted by a large consumer base.

Arena Looping (Unethical)

The user parks an alternate account at the beginning of an arena, or any other profitable location (Depth 11, for example). Then the user joins the account, goes solo, and beats the arena or does whatever that earns money. After finishing, the user goes back up to Haven and rejoins the alt, goes solo, and does the arena/whatever over and over again.

Boost Reselling

This method of earning crowns should only be used when one has an elevator pass or simply does not have the time to play. Just use 100 mist and 50/150 crystal energy to buy a Trinket Slot Upgrade/Weapon Slot Upgrade, and sell it on the Auction House.

Prerequisites

  • 50 Crystal Energy

Rationale

Since a Trinket Slot Upgrade or Weapon Slot Upgrade can be sold for more than 50/150 crystal energy, you've essentially turned your 100 mist into 50 or so crystal. However, actually going into the clockworks will earn you more than 50 crystal energy (in crowns) per 100 mist. So, it is not smart to do this unless you have an Elevator Pass (in which case mist is pretty much useless to you), or do not have time to delve into the clockworks.

Old Crafting

This method of earning crowns should only be used when one has an elevator pass or simply does not have the time to play. Using the 100 mist, one can craft 2 two star items and hope for a Unique Variant. The items are sold if they do not have a unique variant, and is either kept or sold if it does have a unique variant.

Prerequisites

  • Recipe
  • Recipe materials
  • 800 crowns

Rationale

Using the method above to earn money allows for a steady income, while this method can earn lots of money if one is lucky. Most of the time, however, this method will fetch less money than reselling upgrades from Boost. As noted above, this method is not recommended unless one has an elevator pass or does not have the time to play.

Gear Selection

Shields tend to sell more, but having a good Unique Variant on one earns less money. Other gear sell for less, but when they have a good Unique Variant, their value increases incredibly sharply. However, shields with good Unique Variants will still get a high price, just not as much as other gear.
