Notes
This character was introduced with release 2013-07-30.
Biotech Morlin works in the Laboratory, researching battle sprites and their usefulness as combat assistants in the field.
He is first encountered during the 2-1 Mission: A Visit to the Lab, where he asks the player to secure a cache of battle sprites lost during the crash of the Skylark. Later on, he helps the player choose a battle sprite.
Morlin only shows up in the lab when the player is involved in sprite related missions. As the player progresses through rank missions, the lab's appearance changes. Morlin is not always visible in the lab as a result. He is usually standing next to rescued battle sprites in the southeastern area of the lab. After the player chooses a sprite in the 2-3 Mission: An Eternal Bond, Morlin stands next to the Sprite Food Alchemy Machine and provides information about the care of battle sprites. Eventually, after the player completes the ??? mission, Morlin is not available to talk to in the Lab if it is loaded from the Haven Garrison. He can always be seen if the player starts A Visit to the Lab. He makes a minor appearance in the 4-2 Mission: A New Threat.
Dialogue
When spoken to the first time during the 2-1 Mission: A Visit to the Lab:
Greetings, PLAYERNAME! I hear you've recently arrived in Haven from across the great chasm. While you were out there, did you encounter any of our battle sprites?
- What's a 'battle sprite'?
Ah, that's right, you're a new recruit. Most knights encounter their first sprite on the battlefield. Chances are you've not had the opportunity to see one yet.
Allow me to explain...
After the intro, Morlin will repeat this part of the dialogue if spoken to again, either via repetition of the mission or if The Lab is entered from the Haven Garrison and the next rank missions are incomplete:
A battle sprite is an AI-driven construct capable of reconnaissance and light combat support. Battle sprites are highly adaptable. Their AI allows them to acutely observe their surroundings and aid their knight in the most optimal way.
- Sounds very useful. How do I get one?
When a battle sprite is issued to a knight, a 'bond' is written into the sprite's code to support the knight no matter the circumstances. They will near leave your side! Unfortunately, the cargo crates holding the Skylark's cache of battle sprites fell deep into the Clockworks after the crash.
A recon squad has managed to track down where many of these battle sprites have landed. Rhendon has been sent ahead to scout out three of these sites and will meet up with you in the Clockworks. You must secure our battle sprites before they fall into enemy hands!
- Leave it to me, Morlin. I'll secure those sprites. (ends dialogue)
This dialogue occurs if Morlin is spoken to at the end of 2-2 Mission: A Revelation in Flames. If The Lab is entered from the Haven Garrison and the next rank missions are incomplete, the dialogue remains available:
This is astounding! The battle sprites you recovered from the Sunset Steppes have somehow morphed into a new entity!
- They look like dragons from fairy tales.
Indeed. Though their cellular identity is still wholly that of a battle sprite. My hypothesis is that somehow they rapidly evolved to survive in their new environment, but how? Our technology could never do something like that...
- Cradle is growing more mysterious by the day.
Yes. It would seem as though we have much to learn of this place.
Rhendon's report noted that many of the sprites were missing from the site. He suggested foul play.
- Perhaps gremlins are trying to steal our technology?
If so, we must prevent further damage. Now please, there are yet more sprites to be rescued. And who knows what we'll discover when we get there!
This dialogue occurs if Morlin is spoken to at the end of 2-2 Mission: Angels from Antiquity. If The Lab is entered from the Haven Garrison and the next rank missions are incomplete, the dialogue remains available:
Once again these sprites seem to have adapted their form to suit their surrounding environment.
- What have they become this time?
It's unclear, PLAYERNAME. Given Rhendon's report, I'd say they learned something from the old arcane tomes you discovered near these sprites. Fascinating that they appear to have adapted their combat abilities because of this.
- Are you saying these sprites learned magic spells from an old book?
Yes, it seems that these sprites have mastered the ability to focus their powers on skills that protect their knight. Given that and their appearance I've dubbed them 'seraphynx.'
Yes I know. Anyway I also understand that some of the transport crates were empty again. Something is not right...
Now then, secure that last cache of sprites before whatever is stealing sprites finds it!
- I'm on my way. (Ends conversation)
This dialogue occurs if Morlin is spoken to at the end of 2-2 Mission: The Phantom Mask. If The Lab is entered from the Haven Garrison and the next rank missions are incomplete, the dialogue remains available:
Discoveries on the planet grow stranger by the day. Now our sprites are adapting the form of some kind of phantom.
- They look like living shadows.
Yes, quite. These sprites have adapted the power to cloak, to use the very shadows around them for subterfuge. Between that and their newfound skills in toxins and debilitations, I'd say they could be quite handy on the battlefield.
- I assume you've named them as well?
Why yes, given their outward appearance I think 'maskeraith' suits them nicely!
Your sarcasm has been noted.
Now then, about those empty sprite transport crates; we have confirmed foul play.
A recon squad has reported a large construct monster the likes of which we've never seen before making off with several battle sprites. We believe the gremlins to be behind it all.
- I'll put an end to their scheme.
I admire your courage but if initial reports of this construct monster are accurate, you'll need some additional help. I'll prepare a selection of battle sprites to be ready for bonding to you, PLAYERNAME. We'll talk again once I've made the proper preparations.
Greetings, PLAYERNAME! Now that I've had sufficient time to research the battle sprites you rescued I can give you a proper evaluation of each.
Despite their well, strange appearance, we have concluded that these 'new' battle sprites are not only suitable for combat but may have even further enhanced capabilities as a result of their transformation.
I will provide you with a summary of each battle sprite. In recognition of your valor in rescuing these sprites, Spiral HQ has authorized you to bond with one. This bond will last forever and is a significant responsibility.
Please think carefully before making your decision; there is no going back once you decide.
There are three distinct battle sprites available. Each has responded to the power emanating from this world differently and each offers a unique combat experience.
These sprites include the fiery drakon, the radiant seraphynx, and the shadowy maskeraith.
- Tell me about the drakon.
- Tell me about the seraphynx.
- Tell me about the maskeraith.
- I'm not ready to choose yet.
If the player chooses Tell me about the drakon.:
The drakon is a battle sprite that embodies fiery destruction. Its skills focus on direct assault: firebolt creates an explosive projectile, flame barrier surrounds its knight with protective fireballs, and firestorm creates a massive wave of flames.
The drakon is best suited for fearless knights who prefer frontline, destructive combat.
- The drakon sounds like the battle sprite for me!
- Tell me about the other battle sprites.
If the player chooses The drakon sounds like the battle sprite for me!:
So, you have chosen the fiery drakon, battle sprite of those who prefer frontline, destructive combat?
Once you choose there is no going back!
- Yes, I choose the drakon.
(The player will receive a level 1 sprite and be unable to choose another sprite via this mission)
- I'm not sure, tell me again about the battle sprites. (returns to previous dialogue)
If the player chooses Tell me about the seraphynx.:
The seraphynx is a battle sprite that embodies protection and restoration. Its skills focus on supporting knights in combat: ray of light creates a steady beam of holy light, heart attack increases the chance of hearts dropping from monsters, and angelic aura creates a light shield that protects its knight and party members within.
The seraphynx is best suited for knights who wish to protect their party and provide them aid.
- The seraphynx sounds like the battle sprite for me!
- Tell me about the other battle sprites. (returns to previous dialogue)
If the player chooses The seraphynx sounds like the battle sprite for me!:
So, you have chosen the radiant seraphynx, battle sprite of those who wish to protect their party and provide them aid?
Once you choose there is no going back!
- Yes, I choose the seraphynx.
(The player will receive a level 1 sprite and be unable to choose another sprite via this mission)
- I'm not sure, tell me again about the battle sprites. (returns to previous dialogue)
If the player chooses Tell me about the maskeraith.:
The maskeraith is a battle sprite that embodies deception and debilitation. Its skills focus on subterfuge: caustic quills fire poisonous quills that explode when followed with an attack, shadow cloak allows a knight to become invisible to monsters, and hexinig haze allows the knight to inflict monsters with a timed damage blast.
The maskeraith is best suited for knights who wish to lurk in the shadows and strike the enemy with sneak attacks.
- The maskeraith sounds like the battle sprite for me!
- Tell me about the other battle sprites.
If the player chooses The maskeraith sounds like the battle sprite for me!:
So, you have chosen the shadowy maskeraith, battle sprite of those who wish to lurk in the shadows and strike the enemy with sneak attacks?
Once you choose there is no going back!
- Yes, I choose the maskeraith.
(The player will receive a level 1 sprite and be unable to choose another sprite via this mission)
- I'm not sure, tell me again about the battle sprites. (returns to previous dialogue)
If the player chooses I'm not ready to choose yet:
That's fine, just talk to me again when you are ready to choose.
If the player chooses a sprite:
Congratulations, PLAYERNAME! You have become bonded with your battle sprite! It will no doubt be an invaluable companion to you in your missions ahead.
If you have any further questions about raising your new battle sprite, be sure to speak to me or Biscotti here in the Lab.
- Thank you, Morlin. I will do my best to raise this sprite well.
If spoken to again, Morlin provides extensive information about battle sprites. See
Morlin Dialogue/Laboratory. This large end part of the
An Eternal Bond dialogue remains available until the player completes the
??? mission.
This dialogue is available after choosing a sprite in the 2-3 Mission: An Eternal Bond. Morlin will also provide this information if The Lab is loaded from the Haven Garrison until the player completes the ??? mission.
When initiating the conversation:
Greetings, PLAYERNAME. I imagine you have some questions about battle sprites. How can I assist you?
- How do sprites level up and evolve?
- Tell me about sprite skills.
- What are sprite harnesses?
- What are sprite perks?
- Nothing right now, thanks. (Ends conversation)
After the player has chosen at least one option:
More questions about battle sprites? How can I assist you?
- How do sprites level up and evolve?
- Tell me about sprite skills.
- What are sprite harnesses?
- What are sprite perks?
- Nothing right now, thanks. (Ends conversation)
If the player chooses How do sprites level up and evolve?:
Battle sprites level up by acquiring heat, just like your weapons and gear. They can acquire heat in two ways: absorbing it as you battle in the Clockworks and by consuming materials and synthesizing them into heat.
Feeding your sprite materials is the fastest way to level it up. Talk to Biscotti here in the Lab for more information on sprite feeding.
- And how does my sprite evolve?
Your sprite will evolve as you level it up. At certain key levels your sprite will require an Evo Catalyst be fed to it in order to level up further. Once fed, your sprite will physically change its appearance!
It will be interesting to see how these strange, new forms of battle sprites evolve in time.
- I have other questions. (Goes back to the beginning)
- That's it for now, thanks! (Ends conversation)
If the player chooses Tell me about sprite skills.:
As a sprite levels up, they will learn new combat skills as well as gain skill points.
Each battle sprite will learn three skills that you can use in combat. Skills are learned automatically at certain levels as the sprite levels up.
Combat skills become stronger with skill points.
Skill points are gained regularly as a sprite levels up. They can be applied to skills within the battle sprite interface.
When applying a skill point, you must choose an augment to increase, such as the cooldown rate or overall damage.
And don't worry about applying skill points the 'wrong way,' since you will eventually gain enough skill points to max out all your skills!
Once you've applied all your skill points and achieved a very high level with your sprite, you will being to select your 'ultimate skills.' Ultimate skills are improved versions of your sprite skills .Each sprite skill has two options for an ultimate skill.
You may only select one ultimate skill per sprite skill so choose wisely! Also note that selecting ultimate skills will further change the appearance of your sprite.
With all these options, your max level sprite is sure to look and behave differently from the rest!
- I have other questions. (Goes back to the beginning)
- That's it for now, thanks! (Ends conversation)
If the player chooses What are sprite harnesses?:
All battle sprites wear a mechanical harness that aligns their skills to a damage type. Not all sprites can wear all harnesses though. For example, a drakon cannot output piercing damage.
By default, you have an iron harness that any sprite can equip. If you want to branch out as you likely do with your weapons and gear, you need to purchase new harnesses.
- Where can I purchase more harnesses?
See Riley here in the Lab to purchase new harnesses. Once purchased, a harness is automatically added to your harness list in the battle sprite interface.
Additionally, any time you purchase a diret upgrade to a harness you own, it will be replaced by the superior harness.
Harness upgrades are definitely worth the crowns. Superior versions of each harness reduce combat skill cooldowns!
- I have other questions. (Goes back to the beginning)
- That's it for now, thanks! (Ends conversation)
If the player chooses What are sprite perks?:
Battle sprites gain perks at certain levels that you can equip within the battle sprite interface. Perks provide bonuses to your stats.
Perks are unlocked at random. Some perks are much rarer than others and will require a sprite to level up very high to unlock them all.
You can even gain perks after reaching level 100!
- I have other questions. (Goes back to the beginning)
- That's it for now, thanks! (Ends conversation)
We almost didn't make it out alive. One moment everything was fine and the next thing we know gremlins are bursting out of the ground!
