Map Segments

I see you were working on this. I'd like to expand on this in an official capacity. Since you've done research on the topic, your input/feedback would be great. I'm thinking a sortable list with their names being something simple like "a...b...c..." and have the list sort type/spawn/loot (yes/no) and so on. Thoughts? I can throw a template together soonish or laterish if you're interested. -Novaster 15:24, 3 March 2015 (UTC)

Woah that's an old project you've decided to dig up. To be honest I won't be able to contribute much since I don't have Spiral Knights updated, but I do have a big bunch of images that I took but never uploaded which I can host somewhere. Having the modules indexed as opposed to arbitrarily named sounds like a good idea, however I recommend you not use letters as there are far more than 26 modules and IMHO doubled letters (like what you see in Microsoft Excel) look dumb. So I recommend the modules be numbered like 01, 02, 03. Then possibly give letter prefixes for certain themed and purposed modules. So an elevator module on a clockworks tunnel could be CT-E-05, while a standard module in a Candlestick keep module be CK-S-12 etc. The Beast Dens also work on modules too. Danger Rooms and Scenario Rooms are already documented on their respective pages so that saves time and effort.
Maybe I'm giving this too much thought. --HexZyle 02:59, 4 March 2015 (UTC)
Over the next couple of days I'll try to upload my stuff here --HexZyle 03:14, 4 March 2015 (UTC)

2013 heck yes. I'll throw a template together sometime within the next few days. -Novaster 04:01, 4 March 2015 (UTC) Hmm, gonna be a while - we've recently got word back from support about another project (check out the sandbox and this forum node!) I've looked at the files you provided, I think the old UI poses a problem, but they are good data, we'll see. -Novaster 09:53, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

Okay, the March of the Tortodrones has made this project take some priority.

Considering the massive number of modules I have cropped already, map behavior in general (entire areas, not just small modules), the Scenario Room page, and your work on your CT Modules page, and your feedback regarding naming convention, I have made the following:

File:Map-{{{location}}}-{{{type}}}-{{{#|1}}}{{{variant|A}}}.png - for maps
File:Area-{{{location}}}-{{{type}}}-{{{#|1}}}{{{variant|A}}}.png - for visuals of said maps

I have set up a live example on the March of the Tortodrones#Arcade Gallery page section.

You'll notice that it conveniently defaults to 1A to avoid derps. Players/editors can simply change these two variables (in new entries) to keep adding data to lists. Part of the convention reason: easier to work with around wiki categories than having "map" or "area" at end of filename, as opposed to the beginning like it is now.

It's working rather well. If you check the edit history of the two templates (Template:MapList and Template:MapList/Start), you'll notice the large number of hiccups that had to be smoothed over in order for the list to work in the least complicated manner with the most areas possible. The repeats of descriptions were bothering me quite a bit, but it should "look" smoother now, compared to previous edits.

This project is now taking flight, feel free to rent a flying unicorn and come by to comment/help etc. Thanks for your contributions! -Novaster 13:41, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

Template:MapList/doc - Documentation! tah dah! --Novaster 02:48, 14 March 2015 (UTC)

I've begun to populate a list on my sandbox page here. --Novaster 04:31, 14 March 2015 (UTC)

Oh snap! I like, totally forgot about this whole thing for a week. Alright, let's see what's going on. --HexZyle 12:14, 14 March 2015 (UTC)

The derp is strong with some things. I may or may not have been half asleep last night. Looking forward to what you've gots to say! (I just woke up). --Novaster 12:24, 14 March 2015 (UTC)

Wanna add me in-game? IGN is same, Novaster. -Novaster 12:56, 14 March 2015 (UTC)

I've mentioned before, but I don't have Spiral Knights installed. You can contact me on Skype, Evolve, or if you really have to, I don't mind messaging through my Facebook. Same name everywhere because that's the most orthodox and uniform way of doing things. --HexZyle 13:05, 14 March 2015 (UTC)

Yes, I remember :P. It doesn't take too much time to install. Naw, I'll keep contact to sk-related stuffs. -Novaster 13:10, 14 March 2015 (UTC)

Time is not the issue, my internet bandwidth is. Due to circumstance I only get 8GB per month. --HexZyle 13:21, 14 March 2015 (UTC)

Oh dear! Well, it looks like the template is hobbling about on its own like a toddler, I'll let you have fun with that - I actually like the old UI, they'll need to be updated with more recent ones, but the file history will provide more perspective as well as show the relative age of the area. The tweaks I'll make later will not affect filenames. -Novaster 15:32, 14 March 2015 (UTC)

I've just made some stuff for you to play with and test the template out on. Hopefully I'll get to uploading the rest of the data I have (the content so far is a surmountable chunk of my research, about 25-30%) in the upcoming days. You know what I'd like to see though? Once this template is complete, perhaps we could start counting how many modules occur in a level, how many before and after the midway point, and how many before and after the level's treasure route. This data could then be used to make a level generator :3 --HexZyle 15:40, 14 March 2015 (UTC)

On that note, I've always wanted to have the arcade be opened to the Steam workshop so users can use both existing modules to make interesting wraparounds, or even their own puzzles in new modules...players can play them for pure fun (no loot retained etc.)...popular ones would reach the devs...then the devs can deal with loot rules and whether or not to put usermade stuff into the game's official arcade...just so much potential. -Novaster 15:46, 14 March 2015 (UTC)

I meant an external generator for miscellaneous purposes like RP or something. A custom level editor will likely never happen due to the state and genre of the game, and the state of the developers-player relationship --HexZyle 15:49, 14 March 2015 (UTC)

This is likely the case, but I'll never give up hope. I tend to go off on tangents a lot, so, hence the "on that note." I might lose a lot of hope if that "arcade redux" they've been talking about (for how long now?) rolls around and it's not even tangentially close to our dreams. Game is still young, so yea lots of hope...though they do seem to keep tottering about in circles, the recent new rank missions have restocked my hope supply. I actually can't write script with input/output for a generator you've described, everything I do here is self-taught (my college education is microbiology), but I can ask around if you like (or are you able to do these things?). It would be useful - like, what are the odds this D28 CT will be super short and awful vs. the other floor options? -Novaster 15:58, 14 March 2015 (UTC)

It's rather simple to program, I can do something like this in GameMaker, seriously. And it's not hard at all to make it generate at least X amount of modules. --HexZyle 03:59, 30 March 2015 (UTC)

I has a thing for the thing!

Y'know, you can always edit it in yourself >.< --HexZyle 03:52, 30 March 2015 (UTC)

I never edit personal pages unless someone gives me the green light. Or it's obviously something wrong regarding wiki usage. -Novaster 04:42, 30 March 2015 (UTC)

Well mine are open territory. --HexZyle 09:04, 30 March 2015 (UTC)

Snipes

Should we be terrified of the ones doing reconnaissance deep in the clockworks? I think so, they don't take any damage. That's quite the tough critter. -Novaster 12:52, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

You did not see anything. We were never here. --SnipeInBlack 13:11, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

Costumes as images

Oh dear, did I make a boo-boo? D: Can someone direct me to the style guide for these -themed pages? --HexZyle 16:22, 25 April 2015 (UTC)

Yeah that's a booboo. I'll fix that for you. -Novaster 17:11, 25 April 2015 (UTC)

Okay, done. I've not gone through and completed this organization for all items yet (it's on my to do list). There is a forum discussion here about the project, but it's lacking most of the positive feedback I've got from others - I wouldn't do it this way based on just that forum thread. We're aware of the...unconventional format and well, opinions are always wanted. But the categories do this to themselves without much effort, so in a way they're also "meant to." I guess that's similar to eating with a spork instead of a spoon and fork. In case future editors (or current ones) decide not to use categories like this, they are all being tracked here. The project expands beyond aesthetics and lets us use categories like Category:Weapons, Category:Armor, and Category:Helmets more than we would have before. I'd like to eventually have something like what psypoke uses for gear searches in sk, because that is most efficient as more items are added to the game, but I do not have the know-how for such a thing.

Regarding your recent edits: In short, we're only using the aesthetic cat tags on images if the item is an accessory, and only if that accessory is individualized - like for special effects, all glasses have a sheen, so the tag goes on the page, not every image. There's a style guide on each "x-themed" category page in the form of a list in a blue box. -Novaster 17:28, 25 April 2015 (UTC)

Basil

Template:Basil - check that out. We were adding it in for a while, then a bunch of updates happened and I totally forgot! Adding the nonterminal locations right after it should be a snap. We're also trying to make pages have the same sections in the same place...had the same momentum, then rl happened. -Novaster 01:21, 21 May 2015 (UTC)

IDEA: What about a template with all the recipes and their locations on it, and then we just put {{Template:RecipeLocation|PAGENAME}} on the recipe section of the page, and that retrieves the appropriate text from the template? Of course, inside this template we could put the {{Basil}} template. That way we don't have to go to every single relevant page and update all the recipe locations, we can just edit the locations from a single page. --HexZyle 14:39, 21 May 2015 (UTC)
That sounds a lot better. I'm busy right now, but I'd like to work on this with ya. -Novaster 15:00, 21 May 2015 (UTC)
I've started work on it here but for some reason it's not triggering on most pages. I'm thinking it might have something to do with the vertical line inside the basil template messing with the switch statement? --HexZyle 16:56, 21 May 2015 (UTC)
You can't switch through the pagename function like that. I tweaked it so it takes care of itself automatically but can be adjusted for disambiguation issues as needed on individual pages. -Novaster 18:22, 21 May 2015 (UTC)
Did another tweak. Test it to make sure it works on your end too. -Novaster 18:23, 21 May 2015 (UTC)

Reply to Template_talk:Basil:

I think adding the (mission)lobby info in a grammatically sensible manner after the basil template in the sorta "master" template (might we call it AcquisitionLocation instead of recipe, since it involves item location as well?) is probably the best option. -Novaster 18:29, 21 May 2015 (UTC)
I was thinking that "RecipeLocation" wasn't that good a name because a lot of items also are purchasable whole from places. AquisitionLocation sounds pretty good. --HexZyle 02:46, 22 May 2015 (UTC)
Cool. We'll still edit the sub and then paste it over to that title when we're done so we look pro. -Novaster 03:08, 22 May 2015 (UTC)

Acquisition

We are working hard on User:HexZyle/Template:RecipeLocation. I wouldn't put too much effort into acquisition sections, as they are being completely overhauled as soon as we're done with this, which should be soon. If you were planning on slaving away anyway. --Novaster 16:32, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

I wasn't. Dropped into moderate inactivity at the moment, I'll probably be like this for another couple months until my interest picks back up again --HexZyle 10:52, 18 September 2015 (UTC)
