The player is ranked a "Recruit" when they first start a character in Spiral Knights. By completing Rank Missions and getting through the Hall of Heroes, the player can increase their rank. Vanguard is the max rank. This ranking-by-mission-completion system was implemented with release 2012-02-22.
Rank determines what star-level of gear a player can use as well as what missions and depths for prestige missions are accessed. The limit to equipping gear (star levels 0-5) in relation to player rank (Rank Missions completed) was implemented with release 2013-07-30.
In some cases, Player Rank determines event or promotion rewards, as with the Homecoming Celebration 2012 and Companion Prize Box.
This ranking system is separate from other "ranking" systems such as Prestige and Guild Rank.
The associated starting prestige depths and equipable star level tiers do not always sync up.
