Most of the time, higher tier monsters have all the abilities of preceding tiers, with increased intensity.
Thwacker Traits by Tier
All Tiers
Thwackers are the largest Gremlins found in the Clockworks and are also the most aggressive, using health capsules to tirelessly pursue knights that disturb their many operations. These Gremlins attack with an axe similar to the Thwack Hammer by either throwing or swinging it, which can cause a stunning status. Thwackers can belong to Tenderfoot, Ironclaw, or Darkfang clans, depending on which tier they appear in. In deeper tiers, Thwackers become even more aggressive and more conscious of their health. In Tier 3, they will flee and shield against your attacks if they are nearing their demise.
Can attack again after its first swing or throwing its axe. Also becomes more agile and swiftly moves across distances.
Tier 3
These Gremlins have a shield on their backs that blocks all attacks from behind. They also gain the ability to perform a sudden, 360 degree spin with their axe if knights are nearby.
Strategy
Guide: Thwacker Combat
Thwackers are rather annoying due to their speed and the fact that they are usually found in groups (potentially of several dozen thwackers in deconstruction zones). Here are a few important tips for defeating these dangerous gremlins:
Thwackers will start to idle when low on health. Knock them down with a slash from your sword.
Thwackers in higher tiers will idle in corners (usually on spikes or brambles) and will recover themselves if left alone. This is particularly annoying when done by Darkfang Thwackers as they are immune to rear attacks and often end up facing the wall.
Thwackers have a short recovering time after their charged melee attack. Take advantage of this by counterattacking the Gremlins.
Be aware of the Darkfang Thwacker's sudden spin attack. Handguns might be useful, but remember that Thwackers will dodge guns and any other attacks that remotely resemble a projectile (such as a Shard Bomb, the Avenger and Faust line's charge attacks, and even the explosions created by a charge attack of the Brandish line).
This monster has been encountered since release 2011-04-04 when the game officially launched.
