Shadow of the Beast is a 3-2 rank mission.
Overview
Description:
Spiral HQ has detected a recon module left by the Alpha Squad somewhere within the Gloaming Wildwoods. It is your mission to locate and retrieve the module.
The Gloaming Wildwoods is home to packs of wild beasts that have proven deadly for squads in the past. Because of this, Tech Knights have placed Beast Bells throughout the area. Striking them should stun any beasts caught within the sound wave they produce.
Be advised that Recon Knights have reported the presence of a terrible beast the likes of which we have not seen before stalking this forest. Known as 'the Snarbolax,' it appears as a shadowy mass of fangs and claws and seems completely immune to our weaponry. Should you encounter it, try and find a means of escape as fast as possible.
Objective:
Defeat the Snarbolax in the Gloaming Wildwoods and recover the recon module.
Notes
This mission was introduced with release 2012-02-22. The boss stratum composing its floors was introduced with release 2011-06-02, accessible via arcade gates. Players may venture into this area of the Gloaming Wildwoods via Shadow of the Beast or the relevant arcade gate as often as desired.
Gloaming Wildwoods is the name of a geographical area featuring a collection of special maps. As such, it has its own description separate from the mission:
Spiral Knights recruits are advised to avoid this dark and misty forest until they are experienced with the dangers of the Clockworks. The Gloaming Wildwoods is home to packs of vicious beasts, the worst of all being the mythical Snarbolax. Said to be a 'living shadow', the Snarbolax prefers the taste of prey that had been in a state of terror before death and will often mercilessly harass its victims before delivering the final blow.
This mission is played often in order to obtain Frumious Fangs to exchange with Brinks for related gear.

Recon Module: Gloaming Wildwoods
A recording from Euclid, Alpha Squad leader:
- As Spiral HQ is not yet fully operational and most systems are offline, these personal recordings will have to suffice as a record of our expedition until HQ can establish an Uplink system with squads in the field.
The Clockworks are both fascinating and horrifying. Within a seemingly impossible machine all manners of alien worlds exist within the giant globes that endlessly churn through every floor. What purpose do they serve? And from where did these worlds come?
Before the crash the Skylark performed a partial scan of Cradle's surface that revealed what appeared to be a landscape composed of enormous parches of disparate terrain. The Clockworks are a manufactured place, perhaps the worlds they contain are harvested from the terrain above. But how?
